Whether you're in Gravesend, Kent, Essex, or South East London, we’re here to help with our expert plumbing services and specialist Saniflo repairs.

🚽 What Is a Saniflo & How Does It Work?

A Saniflo is a type of macerator pump system used when traditional gravity-fed plumbing isn't an option—typically in basements, en-suites, or outbuildings. It grinds up waste from toilets, sinks, showers, and even kitchen appliances, then pumps it to the main drain line.

They’re space-saving, cost-effective, and convenient—until they stop working properly.

🔧 Most Common Saniflo Problems (And What You Can Do)

1. Saniflo Won’t Stop Running

Symptoms: Constant flushing or humming even when not in use.

Possible Causes:

  • Internal blockage in the macerator or pump

  • Faulty return valve

  • Misfiring microswitch

  • Damaged rubber membrane

Fixes:

  • Turn off the power and inspect for visible blockages (use pliers carefully)

  • Check the return valve and replace if faulty

  • If the microswitch or membrane is the issue, you may need replacement parts

2. Saniflo Running but Not Pumping Out

This usually happens in cold winter months when waste pipes freeze.

What to do:

  • Switch off the unit to prevent overflow

  • Warm external pipes using towels soaked in hot water

  • Insulate outdoor pipes to prevent future freezing

3. Saniflo Turns On By Itself

Likely causes:

  • Dripping taps feeding into the unit

  • Leaking cistern or boiler condensate pipe

  • Misfiring microswitch or degraded membrane

Solution:

  • Fix leaking fixtures

  • Clean debris from inside the unit

  • Replace rubber membrane or microswitch if needed

4. Saniflo Blocked – Waste Backing Up into Shower or Basin

Signs: Wastewater coming back up through other fixtures.

Causes:

  • Blocked waste pipe

  • Incorrect pipe angle (should be 45°)

  • Power or motor failure

Solution:

  • Check for power and buzzing sounds (a sign of blockage)

  • Inspect the pipework gradient

  • If the motor has seized, a Saniflo replacement may be needed

5. Buzzing or Vibrating Noise

Often caused by something stuck in the macerator blades.

Fix: Turn off the unit and use pliers to remove any foreign objects. Avoid sticking hands inside!

6. Water Leaking During Operation

Common reasons:

  • Waste build-up

  • Faulty microswitch or membrane

  • Shrunk outlet pipe due to strong cleaners

  • Failing motor

Remedy:

  • Manually remove waste

  • Replace damaged parts

  • Switch to macerator-safe cleaners

  • Consider a full replacement if the motor is old

7. Foam Coming from Vent

Usually from using too much bleach or harsh toilet cleaner.

Fix:

  • Dilute the water in the tank

  • Avoid heavy chemicals

  • Run the pump in short bursts to clear the foam

8. Tripping Electrics

If your Saniflo keeps tripping your fuse box, it’s likely due to:

  • Water getting into electrical parts

  • Faulty motor

  • Loose or corroded wiring

Important: Always turn off the mains before inspecting. Call GladPro Plumbing Services for help!

9. Unpleasant Odours Coming from Your Saniflo

Bad smells are often caused by a build-up of limescale and waste in the tank.

Solution:

  • Use an approved Saniflo descaler

  • Repeat treatment if you’ve never descaled before

  • Clean air vent area and surrounding seals
